Q and A on podcasts

What is a podcast?

A podcast is a form of audio broadcasting. It is really just like a radio programme that is recorded and edited and then posted on the internet. Because it is posted on the internet, it means that anywhere in the world, that has an internet connection, people can download the podcast and listen to it on their computer or on their MP3 player. The Shire Oak podcast is recorded entirely by Shire Oak pupils and contains interviews with staff and visitors and all the news about what happened around Shire Oak during that term.

What type of activities do the podcast group get up to?

Podcasters get up to all sorts of things, including coming up with ideas on what to include on the podcast, conducting interviews, editing audio files on the computer, writing the words for introductions, creating posters to advertise the podcast and selecting music and sound effects to include on the podcast. It’s a great way to meet some of the visitors we get into school, show of your creative and public speaking skills and meet new people.

What equipment do we use?

We mainly use MP3 players that have microphones built into them so that you can record people’s voices. We then use software on the computer to edit out anything we don’t want on the file and to stick all of the parts of the podcast together. We also use the internet a lot to research and find music and sound effects.

Don't forget, if you’re interested in joining the podcasting team then just turn up to S201 on Mondays after school.
