Every Child Matters

Pastoral work at Shire Oak is underpinned by ‘Every Child Matters In Schools’. We work towards the same positive outcomes for pupils at Shire Oak that are reflected in the Children’s Bill.

The five key outcomes for children and young people are:

  • Physical and mental health.
  • Protection from harm and neglect.
  • Education and training.
  • Making a contribution to society.
  • Achieving social and economic well being.

At Shire Oak we focus on the ways in which we are able to contribute to each pupil’s well being e.g.

  • Encouraging every pupil to achieve the highest educational standards they possibly can.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles and become a ‘healthy school’.
  • Be proactive in dealing with bullying, discrimination and keeping children safe.
  • Ensuring attendance and punctuality.
  • Encouraging pupils to behave responsibly, giving them a voice in the school and encouraging them to volunteer.
  • Helping the community and pupils to value education.
  • Actively involve parents in their child’s learning and development.

Organisation and aims of pastoral care at Shire Oak

Pastoral care is organised through Heads of Year who have a specific role in organising and arranging for the care of the pupils in their year group. Each HOY works with a team of form tutors to meet the needs of the pupils including support and counselling for those who may need it.   The form tutor is very important in the process of care as they see the children every day and are often the first point of contact.

It is the purpose of the pastoral structure to provide the environment that will allow every individual to grow and mature.   Pupils are given the opportunity to experience activities that will provide for their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.   For some pupils there will be a need for active support and encouragement for them to ‘grow’, for others there will be different needs, which will provide the basis for pastoral work in the school.

It is, as professionals, that all teachers have to take responsibility for the children in our care.

The school aims will be achieved in a number of ways:-

  • Our Skills For Life programme is a constantly changing way of addressing many of the issues that face children today – drugs education, sex education, bullying, safety awareness, first aid etc.   Some of this is delivered through Skills For Life and others is delivered by visitors from various agencies or theatre groups who are invited in to provide stimulus for discussion and thought.
  • Various policies are implemented to provide direction and support to pupils. These cover behaviour, anti-racism, anti-bullying, drugs and sex education.   If need is identified, further policies may be put in place.
  • The school must, by law, carry out an act of collective worship every day.   Within the school themes are developed to address issues that require thought and opinion forming.   These themes are delivered through whole year group assemblies and through ‘Thought for the Day’ in form groups.
  • The school council is a vehicle for the pupils to express their opinion on school developments.

This is by no means an exclusive list but is a summary of some of the ways in which the pastoral care structure supports and develops the pupils in our care.
