Thank you for taking further interest in our school. Shire Oak is an 11 to 18 comprehensive school. In September 2003 we received designation as a specialist science college. We have more than 1,400 students on roll. The school enjoys an enviable reputation in the local area, having been oversubscribed for a number of years. We pride ourselves on the ‘feel’ of our school, something on which our visitors quickly remark. We believe that our focus on learning and personal success can only be effective in an environment which is ordered, caring, supportive and disciplined. Staff and students work hard together to create such an environment.

As a specialist science college, we have set particularly challenging academic targets for our students in the sciences and mathematics, as well as working to support the teaching of science and mathematics in the local community. We are working in partnership with 9 primary schools to develop maths and science teaching projects. Science and mathematics GCSE results in both 2005 and 2006 surpassed our targets and were the best in the history of the school.

In our last OFSTED inspection in November 2006 we were judged to be a good school with outstanding features. We believe that our offer to students and parents is of the highest quality. The inspectors also noted that we care about our students outstandingly well in a safe and secure working environment; we have developed excellent, well-established systems to provide support to our students.

We place great emphasis on the highest standards in terms of commitment to studies, good manners and courtesy, attendance, appearance and behaviour. We embrace the values of being a learning community, one that promotes lifelong learning and places emphasis on respect, fairness, honesty and responsibility.
